Paradise Lost deals with the Biblical story of the tempatation of Adam and Eve by the serpent in the garden of Eden and the Lost of the Paradise. Milton states that he wrote Paradise Lost to justify the ways of God to man. Milton proises man's reason and his free will, but he waims against man's weakness and especially the chief of the sins: pride.
It's, infact, the pride that causes Satanis fall and brings Adam and Eve to ruin.
Commento - To take Possession of the Hell
Satan speaks bravely and proudly like a king to his own people. He proclames his indifference to God (line 6: fardest from him is best). Satan has not lost his pride which was the original cause of his fall: he wanted to be equal to God. This can be seem in the way he afferms the superiority of the mind over external circostances. The two, heaven and hell, are interchangeble for Satan. Simply because what realy matters to him is to be free and have power, as it is summed up in one of the most famous lines in English literature: "better to reing in hell than serve in heaven".
Critical Notes
Milton is the greatest writer of his age. His greatest work is "Paradise Lost" that talks about Milton's ideas. The most important element is Milton's conception of the Universe. For him the balance of the Universe depended on a metaphorical ladder where at the top there is God, at the bottom there are brute animals and man is between the Angels and the animals: God created man in his image and so man is endowed with a rational mind but he is also passionate. In this hierarchical view. obedience is the most important human virtutes in fact to obey God would create perfection while to disobey would create chaos and destruction and for Milton pride and disobedience come togheter. At the beginning, Satan is the hero who is the incarnation of the beauty but at the end he becomes vile. Satan became a serpent to corrupt Adam and Eve to have revange on God.
