George IV's reign was a period of reforms. In 1829 the BILL FOR CATHOLIC EMANCIPATION was passed and the Chatolic obtained the same rights as the Protestants. George IV was succeeded by his brother William. The most important events of this period were: the REFORM BILL which abolished "rotten boroughs" and extended the franchise to all male members if the middle class. The ABOLITION OF SLAVERY in the British colonies. The introduction of a system of NATIONAL EDUCATION. The FACTORY ACT by which the employment of children under 9 was forbidden by low. William was succeeded by his niece VICTORIA.
