After George II's death, in 1760, George III went to the throne. The British government claimed the right to tax her colonies to pay the troops that defended them, but the American colonies stated that since they had no representatives in the British Parliament, no taxes could be imposed on them by the same Parliament. In fact, their principle was "no taxation without representation". The war began with fighting at Concorde and Lexington. The 13 American colonies met in Philadelphia and George Washington was given military command. On 4 July 1776 THE DECLARATION OF INDIPENDENCE, drawn up by Thomas Jefferson was approved. It stated the principle that all men are born equal, with the same rights, such as the right to life, to freedom and to the "pursuit of happiness". The main British army was surrounded by French and American forces at Yorktown and had to surrender. With the Treaty of Versailles, Great Britain accepted American indipendence.
