The industrial revolution took place in England from about 1760 to about 1840 and from there it spread to other parts of the world. It was a process of change from an agrarian economy to one dominated by industry. We have some technical innovations thanks the application of science to industry, in particular in the textiles field: steam engine, spinning jenny and weaving machines like the water frame and the mule. The employment of steam power made the use of coal necessary and production developed around the coal and iron fields in the North of England. Transport became easier with the new railways and roads, and the population increased by millions but there were many evils too. The overpopulation and lack of sanitation in factories and houses, which were overcrowded slums. Men, women and children worked in factories up to 16 hours a day for very low wages. Because this situation got worse, were opened charity schools and the hospitals provided medicines for the poor.
