The Aesthetic movement developed in the universities and intellectual circles in the last period of the 19th century. It originated in France with Theophile Gautier and reflected the sense of frustation of the artist, his reaction against materialism. Walter Pater is regarded the theorist of the Aesthetic movement in England. He believed that life should be lived in the spirit of art, filling each passing moment with intense experience, feeling all kinds of sensation.
