The Aesthetic movement developed in the universities and intellectual circles in the last period of the 19^th century. It originated in France with Theophile Gautier and reflected the sense of frustation of the artist, his reaction against materialism. Walter Pater is regarded the theorist of the Aesthetic movement in England.
