The French Revolution broke out in 1789 and the British establishment was united in condemning the Revolution for its violence. Britain became the leader of the 6 European coalition formed against France and Napoleon. The coalitions were defeated by the French armies, but Britain managed to resist thanks to its navy. Napoleon was finally defeated at Waterloo by the British troops. A treaty was signed in Paris restating what had been decided by the Congress of Vienna. George III, in the last part of his reign, had periods of insanity and his son, acted as regent. So this period was called "THE REGENCY".
